Smooth operator

The smooth trunkfish (Lactophrys triqueter) is a charming oddball of the ocean, resembling a swimming box with fins. Found in the warm waters of the Caribbean and the western Atlantic, these fish are known for their triangular, box-like bodies, covered in a hard, smooth exoskeleton that gives them a quirky, armored appearance. Despite their clunky look, smooth trunkfish are surprisingly agile, using a combination of fin movements to glide through coral reefs and seagrass beds where they forage. Their diet consists mostly of small invertebrates, which they cleverly blow out of the sand with jets of water. When stressed, the smooth trunkfish can secrete a toxic substance from its skin, which can be harmful to other fish—earning it a reputation as a small, slow-moving fish with a secret weapon.
