The Atlantic Blue Tang (Acanthurus coeruleus) seen here with a Sharpnose Pufferfish (Canthigaster rostrata). The Blue Tang is a vibrant and eye-catching fish found in the coral reefs of the Western Atlantic Ocean, including the Caribbean. Juveniles are bright yellow, but as they mature, they transition to a striking blue color. These fish can grow up to 10 inches in length and are known for their sharp spines near the tail (the tang), which they use for defense. Atlantic Blue Tangs are herbivores, primarily grazing on algae, which helps maintain the health of coral reefs by preventing algae overgrowth. The Sharpnose Pufferfish, is a small, football-shaped fish with a distinctive pointed snout. It typically reaches about 4 inches in length and has a pale yellow to white body adorned with bright blue spots⁸. This pufferfish is found in coral reefs and seagrass beds from South Carolina to Venezuela. Despite its small size, the Sharpnose Pufferfish is highly toxic due to the presence of tetrodotoxin in its tissues, making it a formidable deterrent to predators. Local legends say that the dried bodies of these small fishes may be the source of the Zombie legends of the Caribbean.
