Hey Mr. Tough Guy

The Threespot Damselfish (Stegastes planifrons) is a small but highly territorial fish commonly that actually farms algae on the coral reefs of the Caribbean and Western Atlantic. Recognizable by the three distinctive black spots on its body, this damselfish is known for its aggressive behavior, especially when defending its territory. It fiercely guards its “algal gardens,” patches of algae that it cultivates for food, and will chase away any intruders, including much larger fish and even divers. Despite their small size, these fish are not afraid to nip at anything that comes too close, making them a bold presence on the reef. Their combative nature helps maintain the balance of the reef ecosystem by controlling algal growth and deterring other herbivores from encroaching on their territory.
